Sus2 and sus4 chords are a great way to add some extra flavor to your guitar playing. These chords are often used in songs to create a unique, dissonant sound that can add tension and interest to a melody.
Sus2 chords, also known as suspended second chords, are built by replacing the third note of a major or minor chord with the second note. For example, a C sus2 chord would be made up of the notes C, D, and G, instead of the typical C, E, and G of a C major chord. The sus2 chord can be used to create a sense of tension or anticipation, and is often used as a transitional chord between two other chords.
Sus4 chords, also known as suspended fourth chords, are built by replacing the third note of a major or minor chord with the fourth note. For example, a C sus4 chord would be made up of the notes C, F, and G, instead of the typical C, E, and G of a C major chord. The sus4 chord can be used to create a sense of stability or resolution, and is often used to bring a sense of resolution to a melody.
Both sus2 and sus4 chords can be played in open or closed position, and can be used in a variety of musical styles including rock, pop, and jazz. Check out the video below to see an example I have used in Sus2 chords
To add these chords to your playing, try experimenting with substituting sus2 and sus4 chords in place of the usual major or minor chords in your favorite songs. As you become more comfortable with these chords, you can start experimenting with using them in your own compositions. Happy playing!
